The value of experience
It's important to note that not every dealer can do this. I am accepted as a certified Rug Appraiser by the Oriental Rug Retailers of America, one of only a couple hundred or so in the entire country. My family has been dealing in and appraising these rugs since the early 1900s, and our experience includes carpets going back to the 1850s. I can evaluate all the factors that go into determining a rug's value - age, condition, country of origin, quality of the wools, dyes, and knotting.
